On October 17, 2005, the University of Chicago broke ground on the Gwen and Jules Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery and presented a program
about the groundbreaking work that will take place in the new center.

A top authority in molecular science,
Dr. Goldstein is the founding director of the Institute
for Molecular Pediatric Science, which brings together
basic science researchers and clinicians to advance
the understanding and treatment of childhood diseases.
The Institute for Molecular Pediatric Science, the
first of its kind in the country, is one of the new,
innovative programs that will be housed in the Gwen and Jules Knapp Center
for Biomedical Discovery.
Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor, Department of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Associate Director, Ben May Institute for Cancer Research
Dr. Greene will be the co-director of
a new center for metastasis research housed in the Gwen and Jules Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery.
Dr. Greene is internationally recognized for characterizing
the important role female hormones play in breast cancer,
and for the development of estrogen and progesterone
receptor antibodies, which have had major diagnostic
applications in breast cancer throughout the world.

Center
A pioneer in the development of patient-tailored
cancer therapies, Dr. LeBeau directs the University
of Chicago Cancer Research Center, a premiere cancer
research and clinical care institution. She leads a
team of 240 faculty members internationally recognized
for their innovative discoveries and treatment strategies.
Daniel K. Ludwig Professor
Chairman, Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology
Dr. Weichselbaum is a nationally
recognized authority on the effects of radiation and
on radiation therapy for cancer. He has recently performed
pioneering research on the effects of combining radiation
therapy of tumors with substances that inhibit the ability
of a tumor to grow new blood vessels–a promising
approach that is just beginning clinical trials. He will also be the co-director of a new center for metastasis research housed in the Gwen and Jules Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery.
