William (Bill) Rosing, a dedicated
and accomplished attorney from the Chicago area, admits
that he can be characterized by his drive for success.
Building a law practice, raising a family, and supporting
his community have been his priorities for years.
Through philanthropy, Bill decided to apply this determination
to a medical mystery: aphasia.
Aphasia is an impairment of language
that affects the production or comprehension of speech
and the ability to read or write, and is most commonly
caused by a stroke or head trauma. Almost 40 percent
of strokes result in some form of aphasia.
Bill realizes the far-reaching
effects of aphasia, and knows that there are many
questions to be answered before a “miracle”
treatment is discovered. By donating $50,000 to the
Comprehensive Aphasia Center at the University of
Chicago, where the focus is on diagnosing and treating
focal brain lesions, Bill has demonstrated his belief
that a strong bond between science and philanthropy
now will deliver medical breakthroughs in the future.
“Commitments like Mr. Rosing’s
are crucial for us to continue innovative types of
research,” says neurologist Steven Small, MD,
PhD, who is working to better understand the brain
circuits in aphasia. “Bill Rosing is helping
us gain technological advantages in brain imaging
and treatment. Without support from such committed
allies, programs like these would not be possible.”
“The University of Chicago
has a vision that I am proud to share,” says
Bill. “These are the research programs that
will one day solve the mysteries of aphasia —
funding them now is an important thing to do.”
