Trustees Endorse Genomics as Priority for Chicago Science

Genomics is one of five topics in science embraced by University of Chicago Trustees at a March meeting to consider the University's strategic growth and future investments.

Collectively known as Chicago Science, the proposed initiatives will require major financial investments from the University's endowment as well as substantial support from philanthropy.
In addition to genomics, other Chicago Science initiatives include:

  • A new institute devoted to research and education in molecular engineering, a necessary component of leading research in a growing number of fields.
  • Expansion of the Computation Institute, including additional faculty, professional staff, computer infrastructure and space. Computation is seen as the key to solving complex problems in nearly all areas of science.
  • Expansion of interdisciplinary neuroscience research under direction of the Neuroscience Institute. Advances in computation and imaging are making it possible to understand brain function as never before while the advancing age of the population is increasing the need for such research.
  • A new building to house the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Department of Computer Science, the Kavli Institute, the Enrico Fermi Institute and the Computation Institute.
